The Wrestler

Last night I watched a movie, that most people believe should have won Mickey Rourke a best actor oscar this year.

I thought this movie was pretty good. I do not however think that Mickey Rourke was more deserving of the Best Actor Oscar than Sean Penn. Everything about this movie is quite good. The acting is the best part, even though it wasn’t the best of this year. The style of the movie is something that I enjoyed very much, the way that it felt kind of like a documentary. The weakest part of this movie would have to be the writing, there are some situations, and objects in the movie that I just don’t find very believeable. That took me out of the movie, whenever one of those situations came up, but they were so few and far between, that it didn’t make me hate the movie as a whole. I would recommend watching this movie once, but I don’t know if I would ever want to see it again.

Prom Night (2008)

Last night I watched another run of the mill, shitty horror movie.

I have to go ahead and congratulate the makers of this movie off the bat, for not making it as shitty as the haunting of molly hartley. That movie set a very low bar, by which I will now judge all future teen horror movies. That being said, this movie is still not good. The acting is not very good, but the worst part of this movie is the writing. I literally watched this with other people who cared about it as much as I did and verbally guessed almost everything that was going to happen. It is the most by the book you can get in terms of a horror film, right down to the shot where the heroin looks in the mirror only to find the killer behind her. This is one of the cheapest and weakest, throw together in 5 minutes, horror movies I have ever seen. It’s not the worst, but I still wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. The only thing that I can say good about it is that there’s nothing really crazy and annoying about the story, except for the fact that the killer escapes from prison through an air vent in his cell, because I guess in the movie’s world there are just unlocked air vents in prison cells.

Slumdog Millionaire

I just got done watching the movie that everyone is pegging as picture of the year at the oscars this year.

This was a pretty good movie. I don’t know if it quite deserves to win best picture, as I think that should still go to “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”, but this movie will give it a run for it’s money. The directing is incredible, Danny Boyle, Best Director Oscar, if he doesn’t win that one he’s getting robbed. The acting was quite enjoyable, although I don’t see any performance winning an award. The writing was quite ingenious, but not as enjoyalbe or personally relatalbe to me, although maybe it could never have been considering the entire movie is about Indian culture, which is about the furthest thing from suburban america that you can get. But apart from that, and what in my opinion is pretty bad pacing,(it feels very long for a movie that’s two hours including credits)it is a very good movie. I would watch it at least once.

Paul Blart : Mall Cop

I don’t even know where to start with this movie, there is really no redeeming factor. The writing is just cheezy from end to end, half the jokes are at the expense of Kevin Jame’s weight. Some of them are more clever than others, but none of them really work. We’ve heard about 7 years of fat jokes about him already from his show King of Queens, in that format they kind of worked because he was an unsympathetic character that the audience was well acquainted with, but in this movie they all just fall flat. But this is really nothing special as almost all of the other jokes fall flat as well. And none of the actors give perfermances that ease the atrocious script in any way. James is obviously the lead and he is one of the worst actors in the film. Alen Covert of Grandma’s Boy fame has a small bit part in this movie and practically steal the show from James in every scene he’s in. The story is unrealistic, unplausable, and boring overall. Some of the jokes are ok, but I believe this is only due to uncredited rewrites from some of the Happy Madison crew, and in no way makes up for the massive pile of shit that is the rest of the movie. I would skip this at almost all costs.

Speak

The other night I watched a movie from 2004 that has become popular lately, because it stars the girl from Twilight.

This movie was a surprise for me. It was pretty great. It definately has an indie feel to it, but it works so well that you just find yourself entrawled. The writing is great, but what really jumps out at you is the acting. Kristen Stewart is actually a great actress, I have only seen her in a few other movies, Twilight and Panic Room. She was ok in panic room, she was terrible in Twilight, which I thought was indicative of her skills, but I was proven wrong by this movie. It must have either been the writing in twilight, or pairing her with that dushe who played the vampire. The other stand out performance, has to come from Steve Zahn, with his perfectly accurate portrayal of a high school art teacher. He played it so great, I believed he could have been one of my art teachers in high school. The only thing I find this movie at fault for is that it feels a little long, but it’s not a major issue. I would seek this one out, it’s quite good. Although sadly you might only want to watch this if you actually enjoyed twilight.

Taken

I just got done watching one of the most bad-ass movies I have seen in a long time, or ever really.

This is one of the most slick, styalized, well executed action films I have ever seen. The premise is that the daughter of a former governement agent is kidnapped in Paris and he uses his skills to hunt down her attackers and bring her home. This is the closest we will ever come to seeing what would happen if someone were to kidnap James Bond’s daughter. The action in this film is just mind blowingly amazing. There are some parts where it seems a little too perfect, but really it’s too awesome to be troublesome. The best part about this movie is that it’s not just about the action, there is a very heartfelt story behind it all. Some of the best moments in the movie are the relationship between Liam Neison’s character and his daughter. If you haven’t seen this I would highly reccommend it. If I could say anything bad about this movie it would be that it wasn’t long enough, and could have used just a touch more dialoge, but other than that it is practically perfect.

I’m not gonna sugar coat this one, this movie was pretty shitty. For those who don’t know, this is a movie about aliens coming to earth to warn us of the emminent destruction of the planet on the part of the human race. In the original version from the 1950s, the message was that we needed to complete nuclear disarmmament or we would eventually destroy the entire planet with our nuclear weapons. Sadly, this message is lost on a modern audience, and instead of doing something like making this a period piece or writing it in a way to still make the nuclear threat relavent, the writer opted to make this movie about global warming and environmentalism. This change makes for a lot of things, the most notable of which is this boring ass movie. Not a lot happens, and when it does, it’s a mixture of overtly exagerated explosions and some pretty horrible CGI. The only redeaming factors for this movie are the acting of Jaden Smith, which is surprisingly good, and the philosophical questions raised about how we may inherintly react violently if we were ever presented with other worldly visitors. But that does not make up for the flaws, and because of that this movie would have to be just less than even average for me. I would skip this one unless you really have nothing else to watch.

WristCutters: A Love Story

This is a wonderful movie, it’s the story of a guy who commits suicide only to find out that you don’t just go into some void you actually go to a drearier world than this one. He sets out to find his girlfriend from our life after he finds out that she’s offed herself too. Almost everything about this movie was just great, the acting was awesome, the writing was sound, it was every enjoyable. The best part for me was the concept and the little things that happen or exist within the suicide world, it was just something that I’ve never seen before. The only gripes that I have with the movie are that it seemed a bit long, and that the ending was a little predictable. But apart from that this is an excellent flick and I highly recommend checking it out.

Lost Season 5 Premiere

Since this show doesn’t start at the normal time of the year with the rest of the T.V. that I watch, I almost forgot to mention it.

“Lost” Season 5 Episodes 1-4(Torrent)

I think this show is sticking with the good run that it had towards the end of last season, and all the new elements including the time travel stuff are just excellent. I feel like there is still a small chance that they could screw this one up in the last season and a half.(Correct me if I’m wrong, but last I heard they were going to stop at the end of season six, with a possible film to follow)But for right now everything is looking good, be sure to check this out if you haven’t.

Blazing Saddles

Last night I watched what most people think is one of the greatest satire comedies of all time.

This has to be one of the funniest 70s comedies that I have ever seen. That being said I couldn’t get the fact out of my head that this was a 70s movie. It just seems to have dated itself a bit, and although I thought it was really good, and can’t really point out anything bad about it, I just seemed a little removed for most of it. Mel Brooks, the writer and director of this film is a comedy genius, my favorite of his movies is spaceballs. And the writing in this movie is absoloutely briliant. But I just can’t seem to get over the gap between the 70s style comedy and the modern comedy style which I just seem to enjoy more. Great movie, but if you don’t take well to older movies, you may have a hard time with this one.
