Tropic Thunder

So last night I watched a TS of a movie that’s out in theaters right now. The sound and video weren’t the greatest and the first 5 minutes were missing, I feel I can still do a fair review, but I just feel I should let you know if you think that would skew my opinion or something.

So I really didn’t like this movie much. It has some good jokes, but they are very few and far between. Most of the movie is just exposition that is suppossed to be funny I guess, based mainly on the idea that these people in the jungle are not soldiers but instead actors. I find it more obvious than funny, but I guess some people would think it was hilarious. You may very well have an entirely differnet opinion about it than I did, so it’s hard for me to say not to see it, since I see the potential in it for some people. But on a personal level it’s just a little hard to reccommend.

Strange Wilderness

The other night, my roommate convinced me to watch a movie that I thought was going to be very boring and silly.

So I have to say that this movie took me by surprise. It was not as one dimensional as the trailers had made it out to be. That’s not to say that this is a smart movie, cause it’s not. But the story is not as boring as you might guess. A lot of the movie does not even rely on the story and is just a string of random jokes that are pretty damn funny. Then again Jud Apatow was somewhat involved with it’s production so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. I would definitely check it out, if you haven’t yet.

Pineapple Express

So today I paid to see a movie that I have been anticipating for a long time to be the best movie of the summer.

So this is a big review for me, this is the first movie that I acutally mentioned on this blog when it was still just a trailer, and now we can see if my anticipation was worth it and expectations were met. I was ready for this to be the funniest movie of the summer, and I don’t think that this movie quite did it for me. I believe the clear victor in this case is step brothers. That being said, this is a very good movie, it just had some flaws that were a little hard to get over, and I was more entertained watching step brothers.

I think the main problem plauging this movie is poor editing. The story seems funny enough, but in some parts it just becomes incoherint, and I don’t know if the screenplay, or the editing are to blame for this, or if maybe the effect is actually intentional, but either way the movie suffers for it. The acting is incredible and some of the jokes are just priceless, but it’s hard to get over some of the rough areas.

National Lampoon’s Barely Legal

Last night I watched a movie that I’ve had laying around for more than a year, but just never got the chance to watch until now.

So I didn’t even know what this movie was about before I started watching it. The main premise of the plot is three high school juniors who decide that the best way to make money is to make a porn flick. Now the core concept of the story is not that bad, in fact the core story is not that bad, but almost everything else, is pretty bad. The acting for the most part is atrocious, Amy Smart is the one bright spot, but she just seems out of place in this movie, both for her good acting, as well as the fact that she looks about 7 years older than the rest of the high school kids. I don’t know what she was thinking being in this movie since they couldn’t have paid her well for it. I said that the core story was okay, but move away from that to the extrainious B and C characters and you just get some hockey, stupid shit. And not just the characters, the gags as well, some of them have absoloutely nothing to do with the story and are just thrown in for a cheap laugh but they just come off weird and out of place. So overall I have to say that this movie could have been good, but as it is it’s a little less than average in my book.

Definitely Maybe

So I watched a chick flick last night, but the girl who was with me wanted to watch it, so that makes it ok.

So I went into this movie thinking that it would be a stereotypical chick flick, you know, silly, overtly female themes, the usual boring shit. I was happy to say that this was very good movie. It leaves most of the cliches of the genre behind it, except for the occasional sappy love line, but without that what do you have that makes it a chick flick so I guess that’s ok. The thing that I liked the most is that not only is this movie not silly, it’s actually very intelligent, there are a good number of political and pop culture jokes that I found hilarious. Mix that with the general likeability of Ryan Reynolds, and the (pretty good in itself) romantic story, and you have a movie that almost everyone will like. I would seriously recommend this to both guys and girls, I think you’ll like it.

Step Brothers

A couple of days ago I checked out what most people are calling the best comedy of the summer.

I thought this movie was going to be very funny. I was almost burnt out on all of the marketing, and everyone talking about it for so long. I thought it might have been overhyped. But thankfully it wasn’t and the movie didn’t dissappoint. This is one of the most random movies that I have ever seen. I haven’t seen much of this in movies before, but it is very much in the vein of many T.V. shows I love, like the Tim and Eric Awesome Show(which John C. Reilly has actually appeared on), family guy, or The Andy Milinakis Show. I can’t really say much more about this movie without ruining it for you. I would just see it for yourself, if you don’t enjoy it, then you don’t enjoy random humor. For my money, this is the best comedy of the summer and I only hope that it can be topped by Pineapple Express. Judd Apatow of course had a hand in both of those movies, but a bigger part in Pineapple Express, so we’ll see.

Wanted

Last night I watched a movie that had been largely praised by a couple of my friends but largely forgotten by critics this summer.

The first thing I have to say is that this movie probably has some of the best action scenes that I have seen since maybe the matrix. The bad thing is that the story is somewhat interesting, but it is not remarkable. Combine that with the bad acting, and hokey tone, and you get a movie that is pretty good, but also pretty forgettable. The reason I say this is that there may have been a movie that had comparable or even better action scenes than the matrix some time in the last 8 years, but I don’t remember it if there was. The sad part of the whole thing is that the story has potential, but it just gets brought down so much by the acting, and a couple of moments in particular are so chessy it takes the audience out it totally.

***SPOILER WARNING***

I don’t like spoilers but I just have to say something about these. The first one is the reveal of the Loom. I mean really? This society of badasses takes their orders from a fucking loom! Are you shitting me? I literally turned to my friends and laughed at that moment. The other one is the entire sequence with the exploding rats. What the Hell! The last time I saw exploding rats was a couple of months ago when I was making fun of an 80s movie I bought at a thrift shop called Steele Justice. It was the cheeziest thing in the world at the time, and it being in this movie doesn’t validate it in the least, it just brings the movie down.

***SPOILERS OVER***

So I can’t really totally rip this movie to shreds, but I think I can fairly say that it disappointed me. I would recommend seeing it. But I would wait till you can get it for free like I did.(And you can too, if you know how to download torrents). I just don’t think it merits any money.

Mean Streets

So about a week ago I decided I would check out the first big movie starring Robert DeNiro that was directed by Martin Scorsesse.

The first thing I have to say is that this is the weirdest fuckin movie I’ve seen in a long time. Maybe since fight club, I mean it’s that out there. I don’t understand half the shit that happens, and the other half is just ridiculouse and random. I can’t really say that I enjoyed this movie, but it made me think. The only thing it really made me think about was what kind of drugs Scorsesse was taking back then, but it made me think never the less. If you enjoy movies that go over most people’s heads and are just crazy and random, but in a dramatic, artsy way, I would check this out. Otherwise it’s best left alone.

Warped Tour 2008

So I went to my first warped tour yesterday. I have to say that it was pretty amazing. I’m still torn as to whether I like the tour atmosphere or the small show atmosphere more. I’m leaning twards small shows, but anyway, I thought I would just give a rundown of all the bands that I actually watched and paid attention to.

Pennywise

Definitely one of the two best, if not the best show all day. They were one of the only true punk bands that was still there and they showed it in a big way.  Every song they played sounded amazing. I especially liked Fuck Authority and Bro Hymn. If you don’t know the story behind Bro Hymn you should look it  up as it’s really touching, and seeing them play it was the best experience of my day.

Forever the Sickest Kids

I’ve mentioned these guys on here before. I have to say that I really didn’t like them live. There music is good to chill to, but seeing them play in a standing arena type of show was just lackluster. They sounded exactly like the cd, and they might as well have just been singing along to it. They didn’t do bad, but they just weren’t unique and didn’t have enough energy.

All Time Low

This is a band that I fell in love with the second I heard the first song, and have never since been disappointed by. They played almost all the songs that I wanted to hear including the first song I ever heard by them, Jasey Rae. The best songs were that and Coffee Shop Soundtrack.

Motion City Soundtrack

I originally wasn’t going to see this band because they were up against Say Anything. But due to some time shifts they played just before them. I had heard that they sucked live, and I have to admit that they didn’t play perfectly, but it wasn’t so bad that it took me out of the experience. Thankfuly they mostly played songs from their second cd, and the best songs from their first and third. Not half bad overall.

Say Anything

This was one of the bands that I was sure I wanted to see, but I didn’t think that I would be as impressed with them as I was. They played a great show, and  included most of the songs that I wanted to hear. It has renewed my interest in them and I have started to get their back catalog.

All That Remains

This was the other great show of the day. These guys were definitely the craziest band there. They had the most energy, they played almost better than they did on the cd. They played absolutely all the songs that I wanted to hear. As far as I know, they were the only band that called for blood in their mosh pit.

So overall it was a good experience and I can’t wait for next year.
